Gas production

Gas production is the extraction and processing of natural gas from underground reservoirs and other sources. It involves drilling wells into gas reservoirs, extracting the gas, and then processing it to remove impurities like water, sulphur and other contaminants.

Natural gas is a reliable, relatively clean-burning energy source. As well as having a lower carbon-to-energy ratio than coal, we can also realise higher thermal efficiencies by using natural gas with combined cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) that can lower greenhouse gas emissions. It is often readily available and used as backup power source due to its quick startup capabilities.

When used to firm renewables (ie generate power when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing), the combined carbon intensity of a renewable-heavy, gas-firmed grid can be very low.

Natural gas can be transported by pipeline, as a compressed gas (CNG) or as a liquid (LNG).

Natural gas is a hydrocarbon fuel, mainly made up of methane, with a wide variety of uses including:

1
Electricity generation
2
Heating
3
Industrial processes
4
Feedstock for petrochemicals
a power plant or a large-scale processing plant
