Natural gas is a reliable, relatively clean-burning energy source. As well as having a lower carbon-to-energy ratio than coal, we can also realise higher thermal efficiencies by using natural gas with combined cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) that can lower greenhouse gas emissions. It is often readily available and used as backup power source due to its quick startup capabilities.
When used to firm renewables (ie generate power when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing), the combined carbon intensity of a renewable-heavy, gas-firmed grid can be very low.
