Natural gas is a reliable, relatively clean-burning energy source (due to it’s lower carbon to energy ratio compared with coal and the higher thermal efficiencies that can be achieved through a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) that can lower greenhouse gas emissions. It is often readily available and used as backup power source due to its quick startup capabilities.
When used to ‘firm’ renewables (i.e. generate power when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing), the combined carbon intensity of a gas firmed, renewable heavy grid can be very low.
Natural gas can be transported by pipeline, as a compressed gas (CNG) or as a liquid (LNG).
