What makes a site data centre ready? Is securing power enough? Not quite. Some developers are also exploring battery storage systems and access to renewable energy to support backup power infrastructure and enhance resilience. 

Network connectivity and resilience 

Data centres rely on high-capacity fibre networks to support data transfer, cloud services, and customer workloads. A site’s proximity to fibre routes, network providers, and major network hubs can improve redundancy, reduce latency, network exchanges, and minimise the risk of service disruptions for data centres.  

Cooling infrastructure 

Efficient cooling is essential for data centre performance. Developers should assess access to reliable water supplies, cooling infrastructure, and suitable cooling systems to manage costs and support long-term operations. They should also consider water efficiency and security and alternative sources such as recycled water.  

Site capacity and expansion potential 

What makes a site data centre ready is the site’s ability to support future growth. As demand for cloud services, AI infrastructure, and digital storage continues to increase in Australia, many operators are favouring campus-style developments that allow for staged expansion over time, that will reduce the need for costly upgrades or relocation later.

Locations with strong access to skilled labour can support efficient project delivery and ongoing operations, while workforce shortages may lead to delays, higher costs, and resourcing challenges. 

Transport and supporting infrastructure 

Good transport connections can simplify equipment delivery, construction staging, and overall maintenance activities. That means developers should assess transport access, logistics capabilities, utility services, and emergency access requirements. 

Community impact 

About 70% of all internet traffic around the world is managed by data centres in the US state of Virginia. Nonetheless, about $900 million data centre projects in Virginia were blocked and $45.8 billion have been blocked or delayed by community pushback. The local community is concerned about round-the-clock construction activity, generator noise, and the impact of large facilities in their backyards. That shows how important it is to meet community concerns and permitting requirements before selecting a site.
