Galilee Coal Project Carbon Pathway

Arche Energy provided a prospective carbon storage study for the Galilee Basin in central Queensland on Wangan and Jagalingou land. It is an undeveloped basin with great potential because it is home to one of the largest known coal reserves on the planet.

The basin’s gas reserves are currently being explored with several large greenfield thermal coal projects in different stages of development. Greenfield projects are projects with no or little exploration.

Arche’s carbon storage study

Arche Energy prepared a pre-feasibility level prospectivity study for the longterm storage of carbon dioxide in the Galilee Basin. Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. It’s goal is to reduce the impact of climate change.

Arche’s study developed a concept for the injection of 7Mtpa of carbon dioxide over a field of injection wells.

Our team delivered:

  • identification of a potential sandstone formation required to sequester the required volume of CO2
  • concept-level injection field design
  • concept-level CO2 transmission pipeline design
  • economic assessment to estimate the cost of storage.
