Braemar Power Project and Gas Network

Braemar Power Project is an open-cycle gas turbine power station near Kogan in Queensland, Australia.

It consists of two gas-fired power stations: Braemar-1 (developed by Shell Energy Operations in 2006 and currently owned by Alinta Energy) and Braemar-2 (commissioned in 2009 by Arrow Energy).

Braemar-1 utilises open-cycle gas turbines with a total capacity of approximately 564MW, comprising three units each rated at around 150MW. The plant mainly uses natural gas as its primary fuel, with coal seam gas as a secondary fuel source.

The gas is supplied via the Braemar Pipeline, a dedicated approximately 150km in length and 406.4mm in diameter high-pressure pipeline running from Condamine to the Braemar site. This complex of natural gas and coal seam gas-fired combined-cycle power stations is located near the Braemar-2 power station, a separate 450MW gas-fired plant.

The plant provides peak and mid-cycle power, helping to maintain the stability of Queensland’s electricity grid, especially during times of high demand.

Arche’s contribution

In a previous role, Arche’s Andrew Murdoch worked on the complete Owner’s Project Manager role for construction and commissioning, including successful R2 testing and AEMO registration for Braemar-1, from 2005 to 2007.

Andrew’s scope of work included:

  • the NSP (Powerlink) interface
  • power plant EPC contract
  • two pipeline EPC contracts
  • connection and access agreement
  • HV SCADA and protection interfaces
  • Condamine compressor station construction, installation and commissioning
  • Owner’s Engineer team
  • regulatory obligations
  • land acquisitions for pipelines.

Andrew’s pre-Arche experience in these areas strengthens Arche’s ability to manage comprehensive project delivery, which requires coordination between multiple contractors and stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and meet all technical and regulatory requirements.
