Reaching climate goals set out in the Paris Agreement will require a huge amount of resources. The more sustainably we can mine these the better.
Sustainable mining is when resources are extracted with a credible effort to improve social and environmental wellbeing.
An ESG approach
An ESG approach involves the inclusion of environmental, social and governance factors in business operations.
Mining organisations can use this approach to minimise environmental impacts, protecting First Nation Australian communities and reducing emissions.
Will mining companies benefit from voluntarily disclosing information?
National legislation changes may legally require mining companies to report on climate-related statistics, the protection of human rights and the environment.
But what about voluntary reporting?
Voluntary reporting gives mining companies the opportunity to communicate their ESG practises that may otherwise go unnoticed.
For example, the amount of carbon offset following an energy reduction review for a coal wash plant would generate positive press.
International standards like those set out in the United Nations sustainability goals may be a great place for your organisation to get started with ideas for voluntary reporting.

Sustainability in coal handling
In 2023, we delivered a carbon and energy reduction strategy for Lake Vermont Coal Handling and Preparation Plant. The Lake Vermont Mine is an opencut mine that extracts 800t of coal from five main pits.
It produces 9.5Mt of coal for transport which means it’s super energy intensive.
After reviewing existing mine operations and processes we assessed renewable energy options and equipment. Our client happily received our recommended energy initiatives, monitoring protocols, plant and equipment upgrades, and further investigations.
